“During the daytime thousands of people come to the Seebensee lake, but for me the best time to be here is in the evening when things are quiet. The light is different and you can smell the mountain pine. You can’t see the Zugspitze mountain from here, but you can see the Wetterstein range. As the sun goes down the mountains are bathed in hues of red and orange, just like the Dolomites. There is a certain aura.

I love working as a mountain rescuer and mountain guide, but I also need time for myself – even if it is just an hour. Often I will come here, sit down and enjoy being alone. This is the place where I can recharge my batteries and find peace. Everything is so far away. You don’t have any worries here. Maybe more people should come here to the lake and get away from it all for a few moments.

Lots of locals don’t appreciate what they have. They have grown up here and for them it is normal. I go travelling every year: I have been to Nepal, Peru and Kilimanjaro in Africa. They are beautiful places but nothing compared to what we have here in Tirol. The water is clean, the air is clean and there aren’t any poisonous animals!”

The hike to the Seebensee lake can be shortened using the Ehrwalder Almbahnen cable car. The walk itself begins at the Ehrwalder Alm hut and leads along a wide path to the lake. Those with a good level of fitness can continue to the Coburger Hütte hut. There are also other hiking and climbing routes around the Seebensee lake.
