The municipality of Hopfgarten lies at 1,107m altitude near the entrance to the Defereggental Valley in East Tirol. Its 725 inhabitants enjoy a fantastic location in the heart of the Hohe Tauern National Park.
Its stunning position surrounded by untouched nature and far from the stress and noise of daily life makes Hopfgarten in the Defereggental Valley a popular destination for holidaymakers. The area around the village has many hiking trails, including some themed ones such as the Water Adventure Trail leading along the Schwarzach river up to picturesque mountain lakes. The information boards provide an interesting insight into water in its many forms as well as the local flora and fauna. Families will enjoy the walk to the Hofer Lacke natural playground with its own wetland biotope, raft and fountain. In winter the family-friendly and snowsure Brunnalm ski resort in St. Jakob offers good pistes and plenty of sunshine, while cross-country skiers can explore the 15km trail along the banks of the Schwarzach river.
