Schuhhaus Haderer

With his small boutique in Kitzbühel producing exquisite made-to-measure shoes, Herbert Haderer is the third generation of his family to continue a tradition founded by his grandfather more than 70 years ago.

Why do humans wear shoes? The earliest footwear created by our ancestors was designed to protect the sensitive soles of the feet from heat, cold and rough surfaces. They were made from animal skins wrapped around the feet and enabled wearers to walk over snow, sand and sharp-edged rocks. Today, of course, shoes are much more: they are fashion statements which also reflect the wearer's position in society.

The cobbler who stuck to his last

These days, people appreciate fine footwear and are fortunate enough to have the necessary financial means can still have a pair of shoes made to measure. However, shoemakers offering this service have become increasingly few and far between in recent decades.

One surviving practitioner of this art is Herbert Haderer. He is the third generation of his family to run Schuhhaus Haderer, a small boutique in the heart of Kitzbühel, and continues to design custom shoes with the same passion, dedication and skill as his grandfather over 70 years ago. From the sole to the upper, everything can be individually selected and combined to create a unique piece of footwear. Each pair of shoes takes several months to make, but if looked after correctly they will last for decades. As they say, good things come to those who wait.
