Significant jubilees launched a large, international exhibition named “Ferdinand II” in collaboration with the Czech National Gallery in Prague. Ambras Castle will displays treasures and masterpieces from Vienna’s Museum of Art History as well as from national and international museums, libraries and private collections.
The cultured humanist from the House of Habsburg was instrumental in promoting the Renaissance in central Europe. He also was an avid collector of art. Archduke Ferdinand II had the medieval Ambras Castle converted into the present Renaissance castle. He accommodated his world-famous collections in a museum built specifically for that purpose, making Ambras Castle the oldest museum in the world. As the only Renaissance chamber of its kind to have been preserved at its original location, the Chamber of Art and Curiosities and the collection of armour at Ambras Castle represent an unrivalled cultural monument. The son of Ferdinand I, Holy Roman Emperor, Archduke Ferdinand II was the ruler of Tirol for 30 years and the governour of Bohemia in Prague. A subsequent exhibition will be on display at the National Gallery in Prague.
