This event is your best chance to taste the pride of Wildschönau: The famous ‘Krautinger’, a special, intensely flavourful variety of White Beet. For two weeks in late September, the vegetable is celebrated at this festival in all its incarnations.
In the past, White Beet (also known as May turnip or autumn turnip) was a staple food for the residents of Wildschönau Valley. Rich in vitamins, the simple root vegetable was the base of their diet and many delicious recipes where created. Eventually, the farmers came upon the idea of distilling White Beet into schnapps, and this was when the Krautinger Beet Schnapps was born—a famous "cure-for-all". Today, Wildschönau is a designated “Region of Culinary Excellence”. From September 19 through October 03, 2021, the White Beet is celebrated at this festival in all its incarnations. Restaurants deck out their menus with libations, soups and other turnip dishes. Plus, there will be a cultural program, featuring a satirical revue by Gabriel Castaneda on September 26, 2021, and an evening by musicians Markus Linder and Hubert Trenkwalder on October 01, 2021. An easy walk with visit to local Krautinger farms is scheduled for September 24, 2021.
