Roadbike Ride
Chiemgau Ride via Wildbichl

The network of roads near the German region of Chiemgau is ideal for road bike riding with plenty of climbs, descents and flat valley sections. All in all, cyclists taking on the Chiemgau Ride must complete 126.5 kilometres in Germany's alpine foothills. Starting in Kufstein, the route leads via Aschau in the German region of Chiemgau to Siegsdorf and Ruhpolding. Despite its length, the ride has only 1,350 vertical metres of relatively easy climbing and plenty of places to stop off en route for a drink and a meal. Moreover, riders can look forward to plenty of highlights such as the castles in Kufstein and Aschau and the pretty lakes between Ruhpolding and Niederndorf.

"The gently rolling hills around Kufstein and the climb up onto the Niederndorferberg mountain make this beautiful ride a memorable experience. Kufstein is one of the locations which will host the start of races during the 2018 UCI Road World Championships."

Trail description

In the shadow of the mighty Kufstein Castle, cyclists start this ride at the Unterer Stadtplatz in the centre of Kufstein. The first section leads along the Inn Cycle Path to Ebbs, where riders turn off the cycle path and ride through the centre of the village before taking the road to Niederndorf. Here, leaving the village, is the only climb of note in this ride - up onto the Niederndorferberg (959m). With this hurdle overcome, riders can look forward to a fast descent over the border into Bavaria all the way via Sachrang to Innerwald. Almost all of this section is downhill, with just a few short climbs sprinkled inbetween to keep the legs turning.

In Aschau im Chiemgau awaits a fine view of the castle and the historic village centre. The downhill fun continues, with just a few short climbs, to Bernau. Here the route follows the B305 road flat to Grassau, where riders turn off this main road and ride along the foot of the Chiemgau Alps to Bergen. After around 60km of easy riding the road pitches up slightly as it heads onto the Venusberg mountain near Siegsdorf. Once at the top, riders turn right off the main road and follow the road through the forest to Unt-Scharam before descending via many corners to Eisenärzt. Riders cross the Weiße Traun river twice and then head gently uphill out of the valley to Ruhpolding.

At the entrance to the valley, shortly after leaving Ruhpolding, it is time to return back onto the B305 and follow this main road past several beautiful lakes. After passing through a forest section between the Weitsee, Mittersee and Lödensee lakes, the road reaches a plateau and then heads downhill to Reit im Winkel and Kössen in Tirol. The easy riding with gentle gradients gives cyclists plenty of opportunities to enjoy the beautiful landscape.

Once in Kössen, it is time to take on the final climb of the day up to the Walchsee lake and the "Schwemm" nature reserve. The final descent of the day to Ebbs marks the start of the last, easy sections which concludes with a ride back to Kufstein along the Inn Cycle Path.

Tip! Fit riders in search of an additional challenge can incorporate the 18% climb from Seegatterl to Winklmoosalm. This 4.7km mountain road remains in the forest throughout but finally opens up at the end to reveal fine views of the Loferer Rocky Mountains and surrounding meadows. It has 440 vertical metres of climbing and is a nice change from the otherwise rolling profile of this ride.
