Situated in the heart of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains nature reserve, the Hintersteiner See is a natural lake fed by a number of underground springs. The water is so clean that visitors can see for 10 metres underwater. There is a walking path around the lake. Visitors are allowed to swim in the lake at the lido but should be aware that even in summer the water is very refreshing!

"Parkplatz Seestüberl" car park or arrival using the shuttle bus service
On the eastern shore of the lake there is a car park marked "Parkplatz Seestüberl" where visitors can leave their cars. Alternatively, there is a shuttle bus service that operates several times a day in summer from the village of Scheffau to the lake and back. This shuttle terminates at the Parkplatz Seestüberl. From the car park, walk along the road in a westerly direction via the northern shore of the lake to the hiking trail, which then leads around the lake. After a short uphill section at the end, the path returns back to the starting point at the Seestüberl.
