Hochfilzen – Hoametzl Hut – Buchensteinwand Hiking Tour

Hochfilzen at the heart of the Kitzbühel Alps, renowned for hosting World Cup Biathlon events, is a wonderful hiking destination once the winter snow disappears. An amazingly beautiful 2-hour walk of intermediate difficulty takes avid walkers from the village center of Hochfilzen atop Buchensteinwand Mountain. The top of Buchensteinwand offers the most stunning views you’ll find in Pillerseetal Valley—and you can even reach higher grounds there: Standing 30 meters tall atop the summit of Buchensteinwand Mountain, Jakobskreuz is a multi-storey building in the shape of a cross. The most exciting feature of this outstanding building, which can be seen from afar, is the glorious 360-degree views.

When it comes to culinary delicacies, you’re on the right way here as well: Hoametzl Hut at an elevation of 1,200 meters affords breathtaking vistas of Loferer and Leoganger Steinberge Mountain Ranges while dishing up wonderful local fare. Moreover, this friendly on-mountain inn offers a rich variety of play opportunities for little ones. The hut is open from June through mid-October on Saturdays, Sundays and Holidays. In immediate vicinity to the Jakobskreuz Cross, you will find the Buchensteinwand Alpine Inn, where you can gather new strength over hearty delicacies. Don’t miss out on their mouthwatering strudel, dumpling and ice cream specialties. The mountaintop restaurant is open during operation hours of Buchensteinwand quad chair lift—which is a convenient way of getting up here, by the way.

From the village center of Hochfilzen follow Herrengasse Lane toward the hamlet of Warming. Before reaching Glaagut Farm, the route turns left onto Tennweg Trail and continues toward Untertenn Farm. From here, cross the field and take the trail right from the signpost that climbs steeply through forest and Alpine pastures. An alternate route follows Kammbergweg Trail to Hoametzl Hut. Continue walking uphill until you reach the top of Buchensteinwand and the Alpine Inn, the highest elevation on this tour.

Retrace your steps to get back down to Hochfilzen.
