Kals Glacier Trip

At Stüdl Hut, a professional mountain guide from Kals will introduce the adventurous to the exhilarating world of eternal ice—its beauty is enhanced hundredfold by the awesome backdrop of craggy, glacier-clad, 3,798-meter Großglockner hovering above. Before heading to Teischnitzkees Glacier, you will be equipped with crampons. Brave ones can even try abseiling into a crevasse!

Trail description

Day 1: Kals am Großglockner (Lucknerhaus Lodge) – Stüdl Hut

This awesome, guided tour starts with a scenic taxi ride from Kals to Lucknerhaus Lodge. Your national park ranger will remain with you on your way up to Stüdl Hut, situated at an elevation of 2,802 meters. This amazing trekking tour offers hikers a rare opportunity to easily access a dynamic glacial environment through various alpine vegetation zones and forested areas. Equipped with spotting scope and binoculars, you will traverse verdant Alpine pastures, tussock slopes and glacial moraines. Your experienced guide will entertain and educate you about the unparalleled diversity of native plants and wildlife. At Stüdl Hut, the national park ranger will give a lecture on the awesome natural beauty of Hohe Tauern National Park.

Day 2: Stüdl Hut – Maurigen Trog – Glocknerhaus Lodge

A professional mountain guide from Kals will accompany you on day two and introduce you to the exhilarating world of eternal ice by guiding you onto Teischnitzkees Glacier at an elevation of around 3,000 meters. Equipped with specialised, technical gear, you will quickly master basic cramponing techniques on your way through glowing blue walls of ice and across deep crevasses. Afterwards, pause for a well-earned rest at Stüdl Hut. The walk continues across pristine and remote Teischnitz Valley to “Maurigen Trog” at the end of the gorge. From there, a taxi will pick you up and bring you back to Glocknerhaus Lodge.
