Kitzbühel Alps: Traditional Farmsteads, Hidden Lakes

When in winter the sun lies low in the sky, it sheds a gentle light on Tirol's wide valleys. This can be observed particularly well in the Kitzbühel Alps. Bichlach, for example, is an ideal place for romantic winter walks and offers fine views of the Wilder Kaiser Mountains.

Fresh snow crunches under foot, sunlight warms your face, a traditional farmstead – lovingly decorated and with a wooden belltower on the roof – comes into view as you round the final corner. Winter walking in the Kitzbühel Alps is the ideal way to relax while at the same time enjoying the benefits of physical exercise. As well as the mighty mountains for which Kitzbühel is famous, there are plenty of smaller foothills around Bichlach with easy walking for all ages, including children. Thanks to its central location between Kitzbühel, St. Johann and Kirchberg, this plateau has a large range of accommodation options – from farmsteads to luxury hotels.

Every Tuesday there is a guided walk through the stunning landscape of Bichlach. Leaving from Oberndorf, walkers make their way onto the romantic high plateau above Kitzbühel with its traditional farmsteads and hidden lakes. The highlight is without a doubt the Schwarzsee lake, one of Tirol's largest moorland lakes.
