Lake Achensee: On the Trail of Alpine Animals

What do chamois and ibex eat in winter? Which tracks do which animals leave in the snow? A guided walk in the Karwendel Mountains with an experienced ranger is the ideal way to explore the region around Lake Achensee.

It is a magical moment when in winter the sun appears from behind the mountains and casts its first rays of the day onto the surface of Lake Achensee, Tirol's largest lake. This region is popular not only in summer but also in winter. Highlights during the cold months of the year include winter walks in the Karwendel Nature Park as well as high-altitude hikes in the Rofan Mountains and snowshoe hikes along the Tirolean Stone Oil Adventure Trail. Visitors also have the chance to learn about the local flora and fauna on a guided nature park walk with one of the experienced guides. If you keep your eyes open you may well be lucky enough to see a group of chamois or a bird of prey in full flight.

Each Monday there is a guided Wildlife Watching walk into the Karwendel Valleys. This walk, which begins in Achenkirch, Maurach or Pertisau, is led by experienced rangers from the Karwendel Nature Park. They invite walkers to join them on a fascinating journey of discovery through this untouched landscape and to learn about how animals survive the winter in this harsh landscape. The walks lead to a variety of destinations, including the Stod-Wasserfall waterfall, the Weißenbachtal Valley and the area around the Pletzachalm hut.

Food & Drink

Hiking is hungry work, especially in the cold winter air. Good job, then, that there are plenty of traditional huts in the mountains serving local delicacies. One such location is the Gernalm at the end of the Gerntal Valley, while another popular place is the Alpengasthaus Falzturn. Regional specialties include Tiroler Gröstl, game dishes and sweet dumplings – all served in a cosy atmosphere far from the stress and noise of urban life.

Fine views and stylish decor characterise the new Seehotel Einwaller in Pertisau. This four-star hotel located on the shores of Lake Achensee offers its guests truly majestic views of the lake and the surrounding Rofan Mountains. Highlights at the hotel include the Panorama Spa, the perfect place to relax mind, body and soul.
