Winter Walking Highlights for Families

Winter walking is a great activity for all the family. Throughout Tirol you will find tracks and trails suitable for children, including a number of adventure trails combining fun stories with physical activity in the fresh mountain air.

Animals, mythical creatures, thrilling stories and a good portion of fresh winter air provide the necessary variety and excitement on family hikes. Winter hiking with little feet is child's play. We recommend a visit to the Zammer Lochputz gorge with its magical world of ice cascades, frozen waterfalls and information boards. Those who like to be out and about in the evenings can immerse themselves in the magical, dazzling world of the Lumagica Light Park at the Ehrenberg Ruins. Just a stone's throw from these castle ruins is the Highline 179 suspension bridge. A test of nerves even for adults! Finally, animal lovers young and old will enjoy the wild-animal enclosure in Foisching, where you can see many alpine creatures in their natural environment and learn how they survive the harsh winter.

"Spür.Dich.Winter" - Back to Nature

"Spür.Dich.Winter" - Back to Nature

Every winter, the period from Tuesday to Friday is walking time in and around the village of Pfunds. The brand new initiative "Spür.Dich.Winter" gives guests and locals alike the chance to explore this beautiful region on foot. On Tuesdays a professional wildlife photographer teaches participants all about taking photos in nature. On Wednesdays there is a guided hike to the Altfinstermünz fortress. Thursday is "digital detox day" and invites hikers to leave their phone at home and simply enjoy being out in nature with no distractions. And Friday is family day as children and their parents are invited to hike up to the Feichti animal park and observe the moufflon and fallow deer who call this place home. The tourist information office and several accommodation providers offer guests the chance to hire a fully equipped hiking rucksack for €5 per day.

From 16 December 2019 until Easter 2020. The walk to Altfinstermünz fortress costs €10 per person, while all other hikes cost €20 per person. The "Spür.Dich.Winter." map costing €45 (€20 concessions) shows all four hikes and includes additional services such as use of hiking buses and the chance to have a go at ice climbing. Lumagica Light Park

During the winter months the Ehrenberg castle ruins are transformed into an incredible installation of lights telling a magical story of alpine animals, mythical creatures and dense forests. You will be able to see the lights as you approach the ruins and walk up the small hill to the ancient site of this former fortress. We also recommend a visit to the nearby Highline 179 suspension footbridge with fine views of the lights above and the rushing river below. The Lumagica Light Park can be reached in around 30 minutes on foot from the Klause Ehrenberg. There is also a longer approach starting at the Lift Waldrast (around 1 hour walking time).

As well as night-time walks and snowshoe walks, the tourist office Wildschönau also offers a walk to the animal-watching spot in Foisching and will be happy to tell participants all about the animals native to this part of Tirol and how they survive the harsh winter months.

Follow in the Footsteps of Miners at Bad Häring

Bad Häring

Bad Häring near Kufstein is a popular spa resort. This former farming village lies on a sunny plateau above the Inn Valley, between the Kitzbühel Alps and the Wilder Kaiser Mountains. Towering high above is the Pölven, a mountain where coal was mined as early as 1766. Today, mining activity on the peak is limited to limestone and marl, an earthy material rich in carbonate minerals. Families will find a themed walking trail leaving from Bad Häring itself and heading out into the snowy forest. Along the way there are learning stations telling the story of mining in the region. The walk starts and ends at the local mining museum in the village.
