Five Farmyards for a Winter in the Snow

A cosy, warm farmhouse, while the snow falls softly outside. Where summers are filled with work, farmers take advantage of the quieter winter months to welcome guests. Here are five places in Tirol showing that cows and comfort go wonderfully together.
    • PlaceSchönberg

Sledding right up to the front door. At the Gleinserhof in the Stubai Valley, a 2,630-metre-long natural toboggan run starts right behind the house. The excellent half-board with ingredients from its own farm is an added attraction. Starting point for a ski tour or snowshoe hike to the ‘Eulenwiesen’ through sparse larch forest.

    • PlaceKals

A view of Austria's highest three-thousand-metre peak. A sunny winter balcony, the cross-country ski trails, toboggan runs and ski slopes are just around the corner. But what makes the Bergerhof really special is the Gratz family, who run their organic farm with passion and dedication and pass on their warmth when baking farmhouse bread or making dumplings together.

A horse-drawn sleigh ride through the winter forest. Located at an altitude of 1,600 metres in the Kaunergrat Nature Park, the Almhof und Reithof Pitztal is a snow-sure destination. With a cross-country ski trail, winter hiking trails and the Pitztal Glacier nearby, the farm offers everything a winter holidaymaker could wish for.

    • PlaceKitzbühel

Peace and quiet in bustling Kitzbühel. The ski pistes, the special atmosphere, the Hahnenkamm races all make Kitzbühel is one of the most popular destinations in Tirol. And if you choose the Lindenhof as your accommodation, you also get the quiet side away from the hustle and bustle, right next to the cross-country ski trail towards Jochberg.

    • PlaceSchwendt

Plenty of space for farm and highland cattle. The Feriengut Unterhochstätt in Kaiserwinkl has a spa area, a sledding hill and a pond for ice skating and curling. If you have time, you should also try out the 140-kilometre-long cross-country ski trail network and the Hochkössen ski resort.
