In Zell am Ziller, the winding road, which is six metres wide, branches off to Gerlos. (maximum gradient 12 %).
In several serpentines, it leads up from the foot of the Gerlosklamm gorge
close to the pilgrimage church "Maria Rast" and further on to Hainzenberg
(926 m). From "Maria Rast", which can be reached from the second hairpin bend on a short footpath
you can enjoy a magnificent view of the Zillertal (snack station next to the
Church). After Hainzenberg (valley station of the Gerlosstein cable car) the road leads over the
Ötschenwirt (1050 m) and the Martereck to the old inn "Kühle Rast" (1191 m) at the mouth of the Schwarzachgrund. The journey mostly goes through the forest over the deep gorge of the stormy Gerlosbach. After another two kilometres you reach the lovely hamlet of Gmünd (1200 m), where the Wimmertal flows from the south. It's a
lonely mountain valley framed by rarely climbed peaks. During the Second World War, a large weekly storage facility for the Gerlos power plant was built in Gmünd. From here the water flows down to the powerhouse in Rohrberg.
