Description

For the 1964 Winter Olympics, not only were individual sports venues expanded and newly built, but the Games also served as a catalyst for urban development and expansion. Numerous other buildings were constructed, whose direct connection to the Olympic Games is no longer necessarily known today. The city's infrastructure, which was already heavily geared towards tourism, was expanded to cope with the masses of visitors and participants in the Games. The Games had an impact beyond Innsbruck, extending to Seefeld, Igls, and Axamer Lizum. Although the surprise decision to host the Winter Games again in 1976 allowed the city to build on the success of the first Games, standards had changed in the meantime.

The 50th anniversary was an opportunity to examine the architectural history of the Olympic Games and their impact on infrastructure – which continues to this day.

The exhibition is a collaboration between the Innsbruck City Museum/City Archives and the City of Innsbruck. It was developed and implemented with architecture students as part of the “Curatorial Practice” course.
