THE FILMS
Hall in Tyrol, the old salt town (1926) | By Karl Köfinger
Commissioned by the local Urania association, the Viennese cultural film pioneer Karl Köfinger produced this city portrait of Hall in Tyrol, which contains the possibly earliest film recordings of the old salt town in the Inn valley. In 1926, Köfinger still encountered blacksmiths, market vendors, oxen and horse-drawn vehicles, and the Speckbacher town music during the procession into the town hall.
Ernst – The Obsession of Singing (1986/87) | By Herbert Haider
“Ernst – The Obsession of Singing” is a short film by the Haller cabaret artist and actor Herbert Haider, which is part of a series of experimental films that he realized in the late 1980s with the collaboration of Florian Grünmandl. The film portrays the Haller “original” Ernst Reich, who shaped the cityscape for decades. Ernst was also known by the nicknames “Caruso of Hall” or “The Singer's Curse”. Haider approaches his protagonist with care and respect, as many remember him singing arias at the Upper Town Square.
700 Years Hall in Tyrol – The Portrait of a City (2003) | By Florian Grünmandl
On the occasion of the 700th anniversary of the city, the filmmaker Florian Grünmandl and the cameraman Mike Mayer created a portrait of their hometown that is both affectionate and profound. The documentary was made in 2003 for the ORF format “Austria Image”. Starting from its history as a salt and coin town, the film takes a journey through the winding alleys of the old town and meets the people who shape Hall.
