Description

Thomas Schütte "Haus T"

KiS – Art in Seefeld presents from June 19 to September 27, 2026 woodcuts and an architectural model as well as a video about the realization of "Holiday House T." by Thomas Schütte. The exhibition connects the series of houses with large-format woodcuts, in which doors, windows, stairs, or facades are reduced to clear, strong image forms.

"Simply sitting there and looking at the lake is also a purpose. Just quietly looking at a tree is a necessity. You can't just always look at images that glare at you or make you nervous."
Thomas Schütte

House T
Since the 1980s, houses, rooms, and architectural structures have been recurring themes for Thomas Schütte. However, his houses are not intended as designs for real architecture but move between model, sculpture, and imaginary space. Some appear open and inviting, while others seem more closed or almost provisional.
The works take up familiar architectural forms but elude a clear function. This results in models that appear both concrete and enigmatic. Under the title "Holiday House T." one of the models has been realized as a walk-in sculpture in Mösern by Rafael Jablonka and can be visited as part of the exhibition.

Woodcuts
The large-format woodcuts display reduced architectural motifs such as doors, windows, stairs, flags, or facades. Thomas Schütte achieves the relief effect of the works with oil-based colors and high pigment density, through which the grain of the wooden printing plates remains visible. The various color fields are not created consecutively. Instead, the individual areas are colored like a puzzle or inlays and printed in one operation – a craftsman-like demanding process that Schütte has executed by a Hamburg-based studio specializing in artist prints.

Thomas Schütte
Thomas Schütte was born in 1954 in Oldenburg and now lives and works in Düsseldorf. Alongside sculpture, drawing, and ceramics, he has been concerned for decades with questions of architecture, space, and the human figure.
Schütte gained international recognition through major exhibitions and awards. He participated multiple times in the documenta in Kassel and received the Golden Lion at the Venice Biennale in 2005. In 2024, the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York will dedicate a major retrospective to him featuring works from several decades.
