Description

The start of the season leads into a politically turbulent time, marked by civil wars, the execution of Charles I, and the Commonwealth. Dorothee Mields and the Hathor Consort convey how closely music, loyalty, and loss can be interwoven.

Exemplifying this are two brothers: Henry and William Lawes, who are among the most important artistic personalities of 17th century England. Henry is regarded as the leading English song composer between John Dowland and Henry Purcell. William was famous for his bold, expressive consort pieces for viols. Both served in the private music ensemble of the prince, who would later ascend the throne as Charles I – Henry also as a Gentleman of the Chapel Royal. During the turbulent years of the civil war, poets, courtiers, and musicians were loyal to King Charles, including William, who would fall much too early. His death caused the king to feel a special, personal grief – for the one he had loved in life and whom he commonly referred to as the father of music.
