Osterfestival: Stabat Mater
ZELENKA Responsoria for Holy Week, ZWV 55; Statio quadruplex for Theophoric Procession, ZWV158 • CALDARA Stabat Mater
Collegium 1704 Choir & Orchestra
Conductor: Václav Luks
Václav Luks and his Collegium 1704 are this time focusing on the Passion music of two contemporaries: Antonio Caldara (1670-1736) and Jan Dismas Zelenka (1679-1745). Both are equal to J.S. Bach but are hardly known to us. Caldara was deputy kapellmeister at the Viennese court chapel of Charles VI and had a significant influence on composers of his time. His Stabat Mater showcases the richness and diversity of his musical language. Zelenka served at the court in Dresden and was highly respected among musicians. His Statio quadruplex pro Processione Theophorica ZWV 158 was composed in 1709 and is one of his earliest surviving works. It already contains all the typical features: deep emotionality, refined counterpoint, sensitivity in the melodic line, as well as an original, expressive harmonic structure. The program also includes his Responsoria pro hebdomada sancta ZWV 55, which Zelenka composed only in 1723. Their popularity is evidenced by Pisendel’s letter (1749) to Telemann: “At last I have the pleasure of being able to offer you the Responsoria of the blessed Mr. Zelenka [...] that the joy of tasting the sweet fruits of this almond tree may be granted to you.
