Innsbruck's best cafés with a fine selection of cakes

A city tour, a meeting with friends or an hour to yourself - it all calls for a slice of cake with your coffee. Here are our favourite coffee houses in Innsbruck.

Munding, one of the oldest patisseries in Tyrol, is located in the old town centre. The patissiers here bake partly according to old recipes, but they also often experiment with new creations. Whether tartlets, cakes, pralines or macarons: it always tastes good. The coffee and cocoa specialities impress with 42 variations. Twice a week, they roast the beans themselves and brew them with the legendary Faema E 61, a coffee machine from 1964. The original interior design makes time stand still in a pleasant way.

Go to Munding: If you need a quiet minute during a city tour and want to immerse yourself in Innsbruck's history, go here.
Favourites: Innsbrucker Torte with hot chocolate.

The Karaffu is minimalist and in love with detail. It's all about excellent filter coffee, creamy matcha latte and pistachios in all variations. The atmosphere? Hip and stylish, and if you queue here at peak times, you know it's worth it. The beans change every six to eight weeks - hand-brewed, from small roasters in Europe and often regional, such as Unbound from Wattens. The matcha comes directly from Japanese farmers.

Go to Karaffu: Coffee, matcha and pistachio lovers.

Favourites: Matcha latte & vegan pistachio cheesecake.

The Katzung, honoured by Falstaff as the best café in Tyrol, is a must-see for culinary connoisseurs. In the centre of the old town, it offers a box seat in front of the Golden Roof, perfect for people-watching. Viennese coffee house tradition meets French tarts, vegan options and hot drinks with and without 'moo'. The historic building boasts a modern interior and the booths are perfect for chatting undisturbed.

The Katzung is the place to go if you're meeting up with friends or yourself.

Café Central, a UNESCO cultural heritage site since 2014, is the last typical Viennese coffee house in Innsbruck. With its turn-of-the-century flair and many newspapers, it invites you to linger. Artists and Tyrolean celebrities appreciate the atmosphere, and greats such as Paul Flora and Arthur Zelger found inspiration here. The classic coffee selection and the quality of the cakes are excellent.

Central is the place to go if you have the time and desire to explore Innsbruck's cultural soul.

If you walk through Innsbruck with the pink-spotted cake box from the Valier patisserie, you will attract envious glances - you are wearing a work of art! As the only Austrian member of the "Relais Desserts", Valier uses Valrhona chocolate, honey from its own apiary and home-picked fruit to make creations that are almost too good to eat. The only thing to do is close your eyes and take a bite!

Zum Valier: For the extraordinary.

St. Nikolaus is an underrated district of Innsbruck with small shops and cultural initiatives. Although the colourful houses are a popular photo motif, few people get lost here - a mistake, especially because of the café [ˈhæp.i.nəst]. In the cosy, shabby-chic restaurant, sustainability is a top priority: regional ingredients, fair-trade coffee and waste avoidance. The fresh, often vegan cakes of the day are naturally delicious.
