The Tannheimer Tal has been well known among cyclists for some time, as in 2001 the peloton of the Austrian Cycling Tour passed through the valley. In 2005, the professional riders of the Bayern Cycling Tour came to Tyrolean soil during the opening stage and were rewarded with the mountain classification of the Tannheimer Tal and the mountain classification of Jungholz. Even professionals were struck by the scenic charms of the "probably most beautiful high valley in Europe." Lush green meadows, Lake Haldensee, and a beautiful mountain backdrop accompanied the road pros on their competitive kilometers. Thus, the Tannheimer Tal has also established itself as an ideal region for targeted training or extensive routes. “The Tannheimer Tal is an ideal starting point for long road bike routes to the surrounding regions, such as Lake Constance or the Arlberg,” says Michael Keller, managing director of the Tannheimer Tal Tourism Association and former Austrian mountain bike national coach. Directions:
Start at the tourist information office in Tannheim heading east, passing Nesselwängle over the Gaichtpass to Weißenbach. At the roundabout turn right into the Lechtal to Warth. There turn right and continue to the highest point of the route, the Hochtannbergpass at 1,676 meters above sea level. Then follows a fast and technically demanding descent through Schröcken and Schoppernau into the Bregenzerwald. Continue there to Schnepfau and turn right off the main road towards Schnepfau village and Bizau. Along a romantic, narrow road, there is a 2.5 km long ascent; the following descent to Bizau is also very beautiful. Arriving in Bizau, continue towards Reuthe and before Bezau turn left to get back on the main road. Then at the roundabout towards Schwarzenberg and continue to Egg. There go straight ahead at the main intersection to Egg-Großdorf and continue to Lingenau. In the town center (near the church) turn right onto the main road to Hittisau. At the end of Hittisau turn right towards Bolgenach and continue towards Riefensberg. Here, before the village entrance, keep left and descend to the main road. Then turn right towards the Aach border crossing and continue to Oberstaufen. After the climb, keep right towards Immenstadt, passing the Großer Alpsee and through the town. At the third roundabout turn right towards Blaichach, through the underpass and then turn left towards Sonthofen. Then continue straight on through Sonthofen and towards Oberjoch/Reutte. In Bad Hindelang begins the ascent of the Jochpass, with a maximum incline of 7%, to Oberjoch. At the Oberjoch junction turn right towards the Tannheimer Tal and follow the federal highway to the starting point in Tannheim.Safety guidelines:
