Difficult, only for experienced mountaineers! Not recommended when wet.
Departing from the mountain station of the Spieljochbahn cable car, a wide gravel hiking trail offers an easy direct route to the Spieljoch summit cross (1920 m). You then continue along a short rocky passage that links up with the start of the ascent to Onkeljoch mountain. Upon reaching the mountain station of the chair lift, you complete a short descent to reach the junction and the Alpine trail to the Kellerjoch saddle. This trail crosses below the towering rock formation before embarking on a continuous ascent through Alpine pastures. When you reach the ridge section, you will also be able to enjoy a spellbinding panoramic view of the Inntal valley and the Karwendel mountains! Following a brief descent along a narrow and partially exposed trail, you will be able to resume your uphill climb. Once you cross the grassy and treeless terrain, you will reach the next rocky section: Secured by ropes in certain parts, this leads steeply upward and into a gravel ravine that may feature difficult footing when wet. The Alpine trail then leads past the Kellerjochkapelle chapel on the way to the Kellerjochhütte hut.
You can make your descent either to the Spieljochbahn cable car via the Gartalm Hochleger and the Geolsalm, or to the mountain station of the Spieljochbahn via the Gartalm Hochleger, Falschegg, and Onkeljoch.
