Avalanche Danger Scale
1 (LOW)
An avalanche release is only possible with heavy additional loading on very few, extreme steep slopes. Spontaneous avalanches (so-called slides) are not expected. Generally safe conditions.
2 (MODERATE)
An avalanche release is likely with heavy additional loading, especially on the indicated steep slopes. Larger avalanches are not expected. The snowpack is generally well consolidated except on some steep slopes. Careful route choice on the indicated steep slopes and aspects.
3 (CONSIDERABLE)
An avalanche release is likely already with small additional loading, especially on the indicated steep slopes. Occasionally some medium and rarely larger spontaneous avalanches are possible. The snowpack is moderately to poorly consolidated on many steep slopes. Experience in avalanche assessment is necessary. Avoid the indicated steep slopes and aspects wherever possible.
4 (HIGH)
An avalanche release is possible already with small additional loading especially on the indicated steep slopes. Occasionally, many medium and multiple large avalanches occur. On many steep slopes, the snowpack is poorly consolidated. Route choice should be limited to moderately steep terrain and consideration of avalanche run-out zones. Extensive experience in avalanche assessment is necessary.
5 (VERY HIGH)
Numerous large spontaneous avalanches are expected, also in moderately steep terrain. At this warning level, no safe operation is possible in ski areas. The snowpack is generally poorly consolidated and unstable. Avoid tours.
