Ten Tips for Hot Days in Tirol

As summer reaches its peak and the mercury climbs, the Alps are the ideal place for a summer holiday. Here in the heart of the Alps there are many ways to cool off, from a refreshing dip in a mountain lake to a walk through a shady gorge. Here are some of our top tips on where you can best escape the heat in Tirol.

1. Jump into a cool lake

Top of the refreshment list? A dip in one of the crystal-clear lakes in Tirol! When it's hot, Lake Achensee at 929 metres above sea level is particularly suitable for this. The largest lake in Tirol is know for its cold temperatures, even in summer, and offers turquoise blue water, beautiful beaches and excursion boats for holidaymakers.

2. A trip to the eternal ice

Even when the air is shimmering in the valley, winter sports enthusiasts in Tirol can carve their turns in the snow. The Hintertux Glacier is Austria's only ski resort that offers perfectly groomed slopes 365 days a year. In addition, the natural ice palace with a constant temperature of zero degrees Celsius provides cooling. An accessible crevasse, an icy lake and frozen waterfalls await you in the underground natural wonder.

3. Spray from the Grawa waterfall

In the metropolises of hot countries, you often see restaurant terraces that are cooled with a water sprayer. In Tirol, we do this in a natural way, namely with spray mist directly from the waterfall. This is particularly pleasant on the loungers at the Grawa waterfall in the Stubai Valley.

4. Refreshment within old walls

The many castles, palaces and churches in Tirol offer welcome refreshment for body and soul. The thick walls store the cool air and are pleasant places to relax on hot days. If you want to brush up on your historical knowledge, you can take a guided tour of Innsbruck's Hofkirche (Court Church).

5. Zero degrees in the Hundalm cave

It is a constant zero degrees Celsius in the only publicly accessible ice and stalactite cave in western Austria. Above Mariastein, well-secured steps lead deep into the mountain. The stalactite formations provide a fascinating insight into the formation of our earth and offer an exciting way to cool off.

6. A cool beer in the beer garden

A shady canopy of leaves, a cool drink and a relaxed atmosphere. There are many cosy beer gardens in the provincial capital of Innsbruck where you can enjoy the hottest hours of the day. Classics include the Fischerhäusl near the Landestheater, the Stiftskeller not far from the Golden Roof and the iconic Bierstindl at the foot of the Bergise ski jump.

7. Off into the gorge: Wolfsklamm

Tirol's many gorges provide wonderful natural cooling on hot days. The Wolfsklamm gorge near Stans offers a particularly magnificent natural spectacle with its emerald green, ice-cold water.

8. Cool action in the water

Surfing in the middle of Tirol? Of course you can, with upstream surfing on the ice-cold Inn. The Ötztaler Ache also carries a lot of glacier water and offers a paradise for water sports enthusiasts in Area 47. Windsurfers will be happy at Lake Achensee and those who want to cool off with tube riding should take a trip to the Brandenberger Ache. Refreshment guaranteed!

9. Deep into the mountain: Schwaz silver mine

It is a constant 12 degrees in the tunnels of the silver mine in Schwaz. The "mother of all mines" was once the largest silver mine of the Middle Ages. The ride on the mine railway deep inside the mountain is a refreshing highlight in itself. The tour is also a welcome respite for allergy sufferers, as the mine is an absolutely pollen-free zone.

10. Enjoy the fresh mountain air

The air gets around 1 degree cooler for every 100 metres of altitude. The Tirolean mountains are the perfect place for people who want to escape the heat in the valley. The quickest way to gain metres in altitude is to take the cable car. Whether it's on a leisurely hike or in one of the many mountain adventure worlds, the cool mountain air is guaranteed to refresh you.
