Attraction Muttekopfgebiet

Imst

The Muttekopf area  was officially  protected because of its unique geological features and natural beauty.

Description

The Muttekopf Nature Reserve covers the southeastern part of the Lechtal Alps. A geological highlight is the highest and best-exposed occurrence of Gosau formations in the entire Northern Limestone Alps. The diversity of Cretaceous deposits – including breccias, conglomerates, sandstones, marls, turbidites, and the famous megabreccias of the "Blue Heads" on the southern slopes of the Muttekopf – makes this area a unique educational example of sedimentary geology.

Flora and Fauna
The Muttekopf area lies largely above the tree line. Dwarf shrub heaths, flower-rich meadows, scree slopes, and cushion plants shape the landscape. The fertile soils on marls and sandstones support a remarkably diverse plant community. A particularly charming feature is the Seebrig area, where a large cotton grass moor has developed in the centre of a basin south of the Muttekopf slopes.

Traditionally, the area has been used as summer pasture for sheep. Ibex are frequently spotted among the rocky cliffs of the Muttekar.
