Hiking

Huts that are open in early summer

The snow is slowly retreating to higher altitudes, the first herds of cattle are being driven up to the mountain pastures and flowers are blooming everywhere. Summer in the Tyrolean mountains is just around the corner! This also means that the planning for the first alpine hikes begins. Like every summer, the question arises at the start of the season: which mountain huts are already open?

Chiemgau Alps

The Straubinger Haus is located on an alpine meadow below the Fellhorn mountain in the Chiemgau Alps and can be reached on foot from Erpfendorf or from the Steinplatte car park in 3.5 or 2 hours respectively. The hut is also accessible by mountain bike and can be ideally combined with an ascent to the summit of the Fellhorn.

Kitzbühel Alps

Several huts operated by the Austrian Alpine Club open in the Kitzbühel Alps from mid-May, including the Wildseeloderhaus, which is ideal for a walk to the Wildsee lake or as a base for a two-day hike. An insider tip is the Hochwildalm at the foot of three mountains: Gebra, Bischof and Sonnspitze.

Kaiser Mountains

While the Wilder Kaiser Mountains are still struggling with the remaining snow, the less rugged Zahmer Kaiser Mountains are the ideal place for a hike lasting several days. With stops at the Vorderkaiserfeldenhütte, the Anton-Karg-Haus or the Hans Berger Haus as well as the Stripsenjochhaus, you can explore the particularly scenic Kaiser Valley. Many of the huts in the Wilder Kaiser Mountains also open in early May.

Mountain Huts Close Up

Storytime

From the Stüdlhütte at the foot of the Großglocker to the Berliner Hütte in the Zillertal Alps and the Pfeishütte in the Karwendel: in this series, we tell the stories of Tyrolean Alpine Club huts and the people who run them.

Rofan Mountains & Brandenberg Alps

In the Rofan Mountains, three huts operated by the Austrian Alpine Club open their doors early, including the Bayreuther Hütte, the Erfurter Hütte and the Gufferthütte, which offer ideal starting points for hikes such as to the Zireiner See lake, the Halslspitze or for mountain bike rides. The Buchacker Alm on the Eagle Trail also invites you to visit in early summer with its sunny location and proximity to the summit of the Hundsalmjoch.

Karwendel

In early summer, the Karwendel Mountains offer an impressive harmony of contrasts with flowering mountain meadows and steep rocky peaks, while the first Alpine Club huts above the Inn Valley can already be reached without snow thanks to their south-facing slopes. These huts are ideal places to stop for refreshments and overnight accommodation on mountain adventures.

Tux & Zillertal Alps

In the Tux and Zillertal Alps, some huts open early. These include the Olperer Hütte and the Patscherkofelhaus, which are ideal for day trips. However, patience and good preparation are still required for alpine hikes such as the Berlin High Trail and the Inn Valley High Trail - at high altitudes snowfields can often be found well into the summer months.

It can be reached either by mountain bike through the Gaistal Valley or with the Ehrwalder Alm cable car and a hike - a special destination for early summer adventures.
