Musical Encore in the Circo-PaniKo Tent
Afrobeat, winking at jazz, a world music beyond linguistic barriers and national borders, sweat-inducing and delightful: At the center of the energetic original compositions of the six-member group BallaBalla, whose musicians come from Ivory Coast and Germany, stands the Balafon, a West African instrument resembling the xylophone.
The driving melodies and harmonies of the band are laid down by Brahima Diabate, considered one of the best Balafonists in the world. The playing and construction methods of this extraordinary instrument have been passed down through generations in his Ivorian family.
Opposing the Balafon is the unusual ensemble of the band: a two-member brass section, supported by bass, drums, and virtuosic percussion with Latin American flair.
This music is simultaneously the only language in which all members can communicate, as the six musicians speak French, German, and Spanish, but none of them speaks all three – the shared music overcomes the Babylonian confusion across all borders.
