Description

The international art festival medienfrische, which will take place for the fifth time from June 1-21, 2026, in the hamlet of Boden in the municipality of Pfafflar in the Tyrolean Außerfern, will introduce itself to the residents and visitors on June 6, 2026, starting at 6:00 p.m. with an extraordinary opening celebration.

This year's theme is "Going to Stay". For two weeks, the words GOING and STAY will be placed in the spectacular mountain landscape using giant letters in the style of the Hollywood sign. The two words also outline the tension that the residents of the Tyrolean mountain village are constantly exposed to: Should I GO or should I STAY?

Alongside this large-scale landscape installation in cooperation with the architecture team VAM, a second eye-catching land art artwork will be placed at the entrance to Boden: As one travels or walks along the road towards Boden, there is a spot where a dreamlike view of the picturesque hamlet opens up. At this location, Studio Carraldo will stretch a giant curtain. Students from the University of Prishtina (Kosovo) will stage the opening and closing of the curtain. This cooperation with the university in Kosovo takes place for the second time.

These two land art installations equally form the two entrance wings to the multi-hour opening celebration. Visitors will then be equipped with audio guides that will entertain them with stories from the lives of the residents and the history of the municipality of Pfafflar during their two-hour tour of the farmhouses, stables, (former) guesthouses, and hidden corners of the hamlet. In addition, during the walk through the hamlet, regional and international artists will perform, engaging with the locals and guests among the sheep on a panoramic hill, on the balcony of an old farmhouse, in the modern fire station of Boden, on a dance floor specially built for medienfrische, out of the windows of the guesthouses, on a beautiful hayloft, in a mystical stable, in a newly built cinema, etc.

Among those to be admired are: the Lecher Alphornblowers; the Vienna vocal ensemble GLAS, which presents intricate, polyphonic songs from the Balkan regions; the exceptional cellist Lukas Lauermann, who has been well known in the region not only since his composition of the "Bschlabertaler Marschbüchlein"; the harpist Maja Taube; the Team KURT from Switzerland, which conjures a theater performance created especially for the opening in the Tyrolean mountains; the cabaret artist Tanja Ghetta, who prepares a delightful surprise for the little ones and the young at heart in the Bschlabertal; etc.;
