Costumes & Traditional

A genuine Tyrolean traditional costume worn by bands, marksmen and traditional costume clubs also includes an embroidered satchel, a belt for the lederhosen. And this is where the Stiegler family from the Zillertal comes into play: satchels have been hand-embroidered here for several generations using quills made from peacock feathers. A job that requires skill and patience: An ordinary satchel can take a good 50 to 70 hours of manual work.

We recommend because:

  • Experience the centuries-old craft of feather embroidery
  • artfully decorated leather satchels

Description

The Stiegler family from Stumm in the Zillertal has been passing on a very rare craft for six generations.

Musicians, marksmen and members of traditional costume clubs are his most frequent customers, but celebrities such as former provincial governor Wendelin Weingartner and Olympic ski champion Stefan Eberharter also trust his skills.

Fritz Stiegler and his son Alexander are one of the last quill embroiderers in Austria to practise this very rare craft! Alexander Stiegler began the fine art of quill embroidery at the age of 20 and is now the sixth generation of the family to pursue this profession. He always wanted to be a quill embroiderer, but in order to be able to practice the profession independently, you need an apprenticeship. His father was a trained confectioner, his son Alexander was a trained carpenter and also worked in road construction. He learned the trade from his father during weather shifts and vacations. There is no master craftsman's examination, the test is satisfied customers.

The most frequently manufactured product is the Zillertal satchel, a belt for the traditional costumes of the aforementioned clubs. The Stiegler family decorates handbags, suspenders, belts, rifle straps, shoes, bell straps for cows, menus and watch dials with their embroidery.

Alexander Stiegler himself wears a satchel that he worked on for over 400 hours. It bears his name, finely embroidered. This special skill has been known in the country since the 17th century - the Stiegler family from the Zillertal has been experts in this rare art from the very beginning. In addition to their profession, Fritz and Alexander Stiegler find fulfillment in music.
