The most adventurous route to the highest hut on the Wilder Kaiser.
From the Wochenbrunner Alm you hike along the forest road to the Gaudeamushütte (1,263 m). Continue here via trail 812/822 towards Gruttenhütte via the Klammlweg. The narrow path that leads through the steep but fascinating Klamml is secured with a ladder and some iron clips - sure-footedness and a head for heights are required! Beware of falling rocks from the via ferrata! If you don't trust the Klammlweg, you can take the 825 from the Wochenbrunner Alm to the Gruttenhütte. A via ferrata set is not necessary for this moderately difficult / red mountain trail.
Enjoy the fantastic view of the "Wilde Schloss", an impressive, legendary rock massif with towers, peaks, caves and balconies and the eastern summit of the Wilder Kaiser.
After a few hairpin bends you will reach the Gruttenhütte (1,620 m), the highest on the Wilder Kaiser, with its beautiful sun terrace and view of the Ellmauer Halt, the highest peak at 2,344 m. With a clear view, you can enjoy fantastic views as far as the Großvenediger and Großglockner. After a refreshment you hike back on way 825 to the Wochenbrunner Alm.
In summer, you can catch the “Hiking bus Wochenbrunner Alm” service from “Ellmau Dorf/Bauhof” bus stop. Alternatively, you can take a taxi. More information at: www.wilderkaiser.info
