Great tour through beautiful skiing terrain, past the snow-covered towns of the Sillesalm to the Silleskogel and Geierschnabel. As some very steep slopes border the ascent track, especially in the upper area, the tour should only be tackled in good conditions.
At the beginning, you follow a forest path and after a short while you reach a larger mountain pasture. From here, the trail climbs steadily, initially through a somewhat narrower forest aisle, which soon gives way to sparse alpine pastures. Once you have left the forest border behind you, the terrain opens up into a wide basin, which is bordered on all sides by steep walls and slopes. This most beautiful skiing terrain is now climbed in a pleasant gradient past one or two crooked little trees up to a small bottom. Now there is only the final ascent to master - this one is a little steeper on the left side and goes up between the peaks of Geierschnabel and Silleskogel. The reward for reaching the ridge is a breathtaking view of the steep walls and high peaks of the rear Valsertal valley. In high winter, you can also look forward to a few warming rays of sunshine for the first time, as the lower section of the tour until shortly before the summit is in the shade all day.
TOUR DESCRIPTION
From the (limited) car parking facilities at the beginning of the forest road to the Sillesalm, the route starts off quite flat in a south-easterly direction. A few hundred metres after crossing a ditch, turn right and cross a short wood to reach a large open alpine pasture. Go up through this to a relatively narrow track that begins above and leads up to another alpine pasture. Now keep to the right and negotiate a somewhat steeper section in hairpin bends, which changes back to gentler terrain when you reach the tree line. The trail then loops up through this terrain until it reaches a small floor, which is bordered to the south and west by the steep slopes of the Rossgrubenkofel. Here you turn east again and follow a small valley uphill in hairpin bends to the ridge between the Gifpeln.
TIP OF THE AUTHOR
In high winter, the entire ascent track is in the shade until shortly before the summit, so it can be correspondingly cold. A stop at the Steckholzer mountain inn in Padaun is a well-deserved end to the tour.
