Get up at night. Climb to the summit in the dark. Waiting together for the moment when night gives way to day. A special experience. How can the answer here be anything other than "yes"?
For: Couples who enjoy being out and about in the mountains, preferably with headlamps
Highlight: The gentle glow on the mountains as the sun slowly rises
Where: Our favourite sunrise hikes in Tyrol
For example a hike up to the top of the Serles mountain. This classic sunrise adventure near Innsbruck requires good fitness and takes about 2.5 to 3 hours from the car park at Maria-Waldrast. If you prefer an easier option you can take the chairlift from the Axamer Lizum ski resort up to the Birgitz Köpflhaus, spend the night there and then climb to the summit of the Nockspitze mountain in just under 50 minutes early in the morning. A word of warning: it is best to go during the week if you want to be on you own as things can get pretty busy at the weekends.
In the centre of the lake it is completely still, with only a soft ripple audible as the oars glide through the water. Pause, ask the question, and toast with the champagne you hid in the boat beforehand.
For: Couples who enjoy spending time on and by the water
Highlight: The tranquillity in the middle of the lake
Where: For example at the Obernbergsee or at the Wildseelodersee in Fieberbrunn at 1854 metres with crystal-clear water. If you don't want to exert yourself you can hire a nostalgic wooden electric boat on Walchsee, which then chugs along at a leisurely pace.
Step by step, slowly and carefully. Don't look down! Heart pounding again in the middle of the bridge. But no longer because of fear, but because of the question that is about to be asked. Will you marry me?
For: Couples who want to overcome their fear of heights (together)
Highlight: The view down as soon as you are ready for it
Where: The highline in Reutte has an impressive length of 406 metres and is 114 metres high - if you master this together, you'll be ready for many other shared challenges in life. If you want a more leisurely experience, choose the suspension bridge over the Inn River near Mötz. There is a very romantic waterfall within walking distance, which is also ideal for a marriage proposal.
Wrapped up in thick blankets, snuggled close together. The leisurely trot of the horses pulling the sleigh through the winter landscape. What is possible in winter is also possible in summer. Without blankets, but in the warm sunshine. Both are very romantic and the question "Will you marry me?" is easy to answer here.
For: Couples who like to watch the world go by at a trot
Highlight: The fresh air and the romantic setting
Where: Horse-drawn carriage rides are offered all over Tyrol, for example in Seefeld. From there you can be pulled by carriage to the Hämmermoosalm, a traditional hut where you can enjoy a delicious meal.
Enjoy a sizzling sauna in the modern spa. Relax on the soft waterbed. And, after a quick trip back to the room, it's time to head down for dinner. What's that in the chocolate mousse? A ring! Tyrol's many top-quality hotels will be happy to help you plan an unforgettable stay for you and your spouse-to-be.
For: Couples who like to be pampered
Highlight: Ring in chocolate mousse
Where: There are several romantic hotels in Tyrol that offer special packages for couples. For example, the Alpenlove in Seefeld, where you can book a carriage ride, a marriage proposal sung by a local choir or the classic ‘ring in the dessert’ - individually or all together.
A wild and romantic park, centuries old. Stone lions on small steps, a pond with ducks. How many couples have proposed under the ancient trees remains a secret. A castle with its beautiful park and gardens is a great place for a marriage proposal at any time of year.
For: Princes and princesses or those who want to feel like one
Highlight: Enchanted fountains and ponds
Where: There is a beautiful old park at Matzen Castle near Reith im Alpbachtal. Integrated into the castle is an exclusive boutique hotel where you can spend the night like royalty. The restaurant at the foot of the castle with its medieval dining rooms is a great place to enjoy a celebratory meal.
Visitors to Innsbruck keen on making a somewhat different marriage proposal should head to the old town, more specifically to the narrow Hofgasse road and house number 12. Here, Archduke Sigmund had a special feature installed around the main entrance to the building. It is a pair of stone channels which run up and over the door. What may seem nothing more than a pretty addition actually has a fascinating function. If you whisper something into the channel on one side, the second person can hear the message at the other end - but nobody else can. Perfect for a whispered marriage proposal!
For: Couples who want to share a romantic moment in downtown Innsbruck
Highlight: The whispering - and hopefully the answer
Where: At Hofgasse 12 in Innsbruck's old town centre. As there is a lot going on during the day, you should pay a visit to the ‘whispering arch’ (Flüsterbogen) early in the morning or late in the evening.
