The Karwendel Nature Park covers almost the entire Karwendel massif and, with an area of 727 km², is the largest Tyrolean protected area and the largest nature park in Austria.
Due to its topography, the Karwendel has an above-average proportion of natural habitats such as primeval forests and wild rivers and is home to a large number of important animal and plant species throughout Europe, such as golden eagle, white-backed woodpecker and lady's slipper.
For centuries, alpine pastures, forests and hunting have shaped the area as classic alpine forms of use. The development of alpine tourism began in the second half of the 19th century and today offers numerous possibilities for different forms of alpinism with more than 50 managed huts and alpine pastures.
