Schloss Schneeberg
****
In the mountaineering village of Trins on the valley floor next to the Gschnitzbach stream is Schneeberg Castle (Schloss Schneeburg/Schloss Sarnthein). It is hidden behind large spruce and larch trees on the moraine hill. The original castle was mentioned as early as the 13th century, but today only the defence tower and a piece of the old wall from that time remain. The castle can only be visited from the outside.
There are no remains of the 13th century castle. The residential building, built in the 18th century at its core, was largely renovated in 1910. A northern side wing used as a stable until 1910 has a chamfered round-arched door from the 16th century on the ground floor. Remains of a formerly extensive enclosure wall with two 16th-century round towers were restored in 1928, and another third tower is still somewhat recognisable. In 2014, the tower was renovated and re-shingled.
