Attraction St. Barbara Chapel

Trins

Barbara of Nicomedia (Barbara, from Greek Βαρβάρα "the stranger") is a popular Christian saint.

Description

According to tradition, Barbara was a Christian martyr of the 3rd century. She was beheaded by her father Dioscuros because she refused to give up her Christian faith. According to tradition, these events took place mainly in Nicomedia (today İzmit) in Asia Minor. Barbara is venerated as a saint in the Christian churches. In the Protestant calendar of names, Barbara is also called a martyr.

The old mining regions of Saxony, Silesia and Bohemia were already characterised by the veneration of Barbara in the late Middle Ages. In the mining regions of the Alps, the cult of St. Barbara came largely only in the course of the Counter-Reformation. Thus, the Barbara Chapel in Trins refers to the earlier mining industry. The Barbara Chapel in Gossensass is also nearby.
