The Concerto Scirocco featuring bassoonist Giulia Genini and the vocal ensemble La Boz Galana have uncovered Christmas music from Latin America: villancicos and ensaladas from 17th century colonial Mexico, sung in the cathedrals of the New World – in Spanish, Portuguese, Nahuatl, and Latin.
Their guiding star is the Guatemalan composer Gaspar Fernández, who captured the diversity of the Baroque not only through his collection Cancionero with 270 pieces but also preserved it for future generations. In this music, indigenous peoples and Spanish conquerors, African slaves and Sephardic refugees meet – among them as shepherds of the Christmas story, united in a rhythm that unmistakably breathes the soul of Latin America. It is not a purely Iberian heritage, but a soundscape of cultural exchange: polyphonic, rhythmic, vibrant. Many of the pieces are played here for the first time.
