English Winter Tale
A winter journey through British soundscapes
Rough and gentle, folkloric and artistic, festive and dance-like: “English Winter Tale” leads through the multifaceted soundscapes of the British Isles. Works by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Granville Bantock, Henry Purcell, and Gustav Holst encounter traditional melodies, Scottish dances, and Christmas sounds.
At the center are two large-scale works: Granville Bantock's pictorial “Scenes from the Scottish Highlands” and Gustav Holst's vibrant “St. Paul’s Suite”. In between, smaller musical windows open repeatedly, telling stories of folk music, historical dances, and old melodies.
A special role is taken by the harp. Its transparent, colorful sound runs like a red thread through the evening, connecting the different epochs and musical characters. Together with the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, a program full of contrasts is created, blending winter atmosphere with the musical diversity of the British Isles.
