Together we conjure an apple strudel from regional ingredients using stretched strudel dough and then enjoy the typical Austrian pastry with a cup of coffee. Love is famously said to go through the stomach!
The apple strudel is considered one of the classics of Austrian cuisine. Its history is linked to the Oriental tradition of very thin pastry sheets. This made its way into Viennese cuisine through the Ottoman Empire and Hungary. The stretched strudel dough is usually filled with apples, cinnamon, sugar, raisins, and toasted breadcrumbs. It tastes particularly good warm and is served with cream or vanilla sauce.
