An evening of two legends of the turn of the century: Ravel and Ligeti. Quartissimo takes on the challenge. The young Tyrolean string quartet, founded in 2016, consists of two pairs of siblings and is one of the most exciting young ensembles in the Austrian chamber music scene. With Ravel and Ligeti, they dedicate themselves to the more modern repertoire.
Ravel's only string quartet in F major op. 35 was composed during his studies with Gabriel Fauré at the Conservatoire de Paris and was received with considerable controversy among contemporaries. Fauré, to whom the work is dedicated, was rather dismissive, while Debussy was completely enthusiastic and urged Ravel not to change a single note. Ligeti's String Quartet No. 1 "Métamorphoses nocturnes" was created for the drawer. Life in Hungary was completely controlled by the communist dictatorship. Artists relied on the culture of the closed room; the majority chose internal emigration. Ligeti was inspired by Bartók's quartets – which he only knew from the score, as they were not allowed to be performed. Even though Ligeti himself describes the quartet as prehistoric, it is completely independent and overwhelming.
With this concert, we commemorate Gerhard Crepaz and prepare for our 60th anniversary. We had a close connection to György Ligeti. He visited Hall four times with his music and for masterclasses.
