On this guided hike in Tulfes, we trek from the Tulfein mountain station with snowshoes over snowy trails to the longest larch bench at Schartenkogel. The view of Karwendel, Inn Valley, and Volder Valley is breathtaking! On the way back, we fortify ourselves at the Tulfein Alm with Tyrolean delicacies.
Snowshoe hiking has a millennia-old history. The wide surface area distributes body weight over the snow. This reduces sinking and makes walking in deep snow easier.
An exciting find comes from the Ötztal Alps: A snowshoe made of birch wood was discovered at Gurgler Eisjoch in 2003. It was dated to 3800 to 3700 B.C. and is even older than the famous Ötzi. Its oval wooden frame shows how people were already equipped for traveling in the snowy high mountains nearly 6,000 years ago.
