The Pitztal Wild Face is a time trial race that is not evaluated based on the line taken, as is customary in Freeride World Qualifier events. A competitive run takes place on the north face of the Mittagskogel , and 80 riders, plus the 5 winners from the previous year, can participate. Starting numbers are assigned at the riders' meeting after the mandatory course inspection the day before. There are 4 different categories: Ski Men and Women, and Snowboard Men and Women. Since 2013 , the Pitztal Wild Face has been held under the auspices of the Freeride World Tour as a Freeride World Qualifier event.
The Pitztal Wild Face is a 2-star qualifier event of the Freeride World Tour, but due to its exceptional format, it is an exception. Depending on category and placement, ski and snowboard men as well as ski and snowboard women can collect points for the Freeride World Qualifier series , which they need to secure a starting spot in higher star category qualifier events, and also to qualify as the best skiers or snowboarders of the qualifier series of a winter to participate in the Freeride World Tour the following year. With its unique race format, the Pitztal Wild Face is one-of-a-kind among Freeride World Qualifier events. It is only timed and not ranked through points awarded by judges as is otherwise typical.
