Hall and Smoke Between Delusion, Wit, and Courage

“Hall and Smoke”, the Stromboli series for progressive jazz, presents in its autumn edition two Austrian bands that condense their distinctive sound languages into sensual and multilayered concert experiences. The urban jazz quartet Synesthetic4 combines elements of nu jazz with experimental hip-hop and contemporary electronica, moving “sovereignly between delusion and wit” (Tom Gsteiger). Their debut album “Pickedem” was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize, and in 2024 the ensemble received the first Austrian Jazz Prize. In 2025, their fourth studio album “Bread” was released. Line-up: Vincent Pongrácz (clarinet, voice), Peter Rom (guitar), Manuel Mayr (bass), Andreas Lettner (drums) The Tyrolean “Minimal Jazz Chamber Quartet” HI5 demonstrates in its seventh album “POOL” its tremendous courage towards unshakeable constants. The classic HI5 sound celebrated there is drawn from the sovereign-virtuosic way in which the band members seem to communicate musically with ease. The sum of the artistic possibility spaces and the “pools” of the individual musicians is always more than just the sum of its parts.
