Red but beaming faces everywhere: Every year, up to a thousand happy athletes, inspired by their experiences in nature, trickle in at the finish line of the Zillertal Steinbock March.
The Zillertal Ibex Hike and Ibex Run are occasions to celebrate athletic excellence in style. The supporting program for the hiking and mountain running competitions includes a festival with children’s activities, live music, and, of course, award ceremonies.
The high-altitude hike covers a 30-kilometer route with 1,871 meters of ascent and 1,610 meters of descent through the Zillertal Alps. The hike begins at 5 a.m. at the Ginzling Nature Park Center in the upper Zillertal. The route passes through the Floitental valley to the Mörchnerscharte at an elevation of 2,870 meters, the highest point of the march. The descent takes participants through the Zemmgrund valley, past the Berliner Hütte, to the finish line at the Alpengasthof Breitlahner.
Since the hike takes place in terrain that is partly high-alpine in character, participants should be in good physical condition, have stamina, be sure-footed, and have a head for heights. All participants will receive a Steinbockmarsch badge.
