Endless descents, stunning views – the Hohe Salve always by your side
The tour starts at the Markbachjochbahn cable car – and it's very relaxed at first, as the ascent is by gondola.
From the mountain station, you begin with a great descent on the sunny side of the Penningberg.
The route continues slightly downhill into the rearmost basin of the Penningberg before turning back onto alpine pastureland and forest roads.
The descent to this point is approx. 7 km.
The strenuous climb of almost 500 m before you can take a break at the Haag-Alm. The Haag-Alm snack bar is only open in winter. At the alpine pasture, you will find a trough (fountain) filled with drinks (self-service, cash desk nearby).
Cyclists' hearts will beat faster again.
This is because there are another 6 km of forest roads downhill to the next valley and the village center of Kelchsau. From here, you follow the paved country road for a while until you turn left again towards “Traucha” (be careful, it's easy to miss the turn-off) and ride back to Niederau via the beautiful, tranquil village of Penningdörfl.
There are numerous places to stop for refreshments: Rübezahlhütte & Markbachjochalm at Markbachjoch/Niederau, Fuchswirt Kelchsau, Leamwirt Penningdörfl, Tennladen & Bichlwirt Niederau.
