Description:
A winter hike with a border crossing. Discover the deep winter area between Austria and Germany. Enjoy a hike through an untouched landscape.
It doesn’t always have to be skiing, snowboarding, or cross-country skiing. On nearly 81 kilometers of cleared paths, hikers stroll through the snowy fairy tale landscape. Cozy huts invite you to stop along the way. Sit by the fireplace, warm yourself with a Jaga tea, or recharge with a snack for the next kilometers – this is how you can fully enjoy snow walks.
From the church in Schattwald heading west and through the district of Kappl along the Vils. Cross the Vils at the bridge and continue on Rehbachstraße to the Unterjoch junction. Turn left and follow the path through the district of Steinenberg to Unterjoch. The return can be made via the same route or over Oberjoch back to Schattwald.
Tip:The return can be made via the same route or extended via Oberjoch back to Schattwald.
Safety guidelines:It should be noted that there is an increased risk of accidents and injuries when winter hiking as well. Particularly in winter, special attention must be paid to the condition of the paths. Suitable clothing, good footwear, and possibly hiking poles provide additional safety. Stay on the marked paths.
Equipment:Modern and well-maintained equipment (shoes, poles, and clothing) not only provides considerable safety but also makes winter hiking much easier. Sun protection (high SPF and possibly sunglasses) and enough fluids should not be forgotten.
