The first cable car opened in St. Anton am Arlberg in the 1930s. Today, it is home to one of the largest ski resorts in Tyrol.
It was ski pioneer Hannes Schneider who laid the foundations for the long tradition of winter sports in St. Anton am Arlberg from 1907 as a ski instructor and with the invention of a new, revolutionary piste technique. The first winter sports cable car, the Galzigbahn, was opened in the Tyrolean village back in the 1930s. Today, the ski resort on the Arlberg is one of the largest and best-known in the Alps. An almost unmissable network of pistes with many modern cable cars and lifts stretches around the peaks on the border between Tyrol and Vorarlberg. It can be used with just one ski pass.
You can board the new Galzigbahn lift directly in the village, which takes you to the most varied part of the ski area in just a few minutes. There are not only several carving slopes suitable for beginners with fantastic views of the mighty peaks. Other lifts also take winter sports enthusiasts further up to the Schindlerkar and the 2,811-high Vallugaspitze, the highest point in the ski area.
Several fun parks, including the Stanton Park, inspire snowboarders. There is a permanent race track as well as countless huts and restaurants. In the Rendl area, Tyrol's only winter via ferrata challenges those in good physical condition. The difficult climb leads up to an altitude of 2,732 meters - and then rewards the effort with great views and a spectacular ski descent through the deep snow.
