Hikers exploring Tirol on foot will feel as free as a bird - not only on the Eagle Walk, one of the six Great Walks selected by our expert jury. Despite their many differences, all the walks chosen have one thing in common: they offer hikers the chance to get away from it all, discover the beauty of nature and experience a true adventure in the Alps. Most of the walks lead through high-alpine terrain and are challenging, even for experienced hikers. Those who decide to take on one or several of these challenges will, however, be richly rewarded with majestic views and memories for a lifetime.

Trail quality, landscape, accommodation, technical demands and special highlights - those were the criteria used by our expert judges when carrying out the difficult task of choosing six Great Walks from the more than 20 long-distance hiking trails in Tirol totalling hundreds of kilometres and tens of thousands of vertical metres. "This hike underlines the fascinating contrast between alpine wilderness and city life, particularly on the Goetheweg Trail overlooking Innsbruck."

Mike Rutter, mountain guide with the Austrian Alpine Club

"The highlight of the Berlin High Trail is the Berliner Hütte, a listed building in the mountains with a magnificent 19th century dining room."

Peter Kapelari responsible for huts, trails and cartography at the Austrian Alpine Club

"The Zirbenweg Trail takes walkers through Europe's largest pinewood forest. The views of the Inn Valley far below are just as impressive as the trees themselves."

Ambros Gasser, general manager of the Innsbruck Alpine School

"Wild, majestic and powerful are some of the best words to describe the Lechtal High Trail. One of the undoubted highlights is the natural amphitheatre around the Steinsee lake."

Irene Rapp, nature editor at the "Tiroler Tageszeitung" newspaper

"The incredible thing about the Stubai High Trail is the majestic view it offers of the mountains and glaciers over 3,000m. The section between the Dresdnerhütte and the Bremer Hütte huts enables you to get particularly close to the glaciers."

Mike Rutter, mountain guide with the Austrian Alpine Club

"Hiking along the Carnic High Trail is like journeying back in time. Trenches and military outposts can be found between flower-filled meadows and shimmering lakes."

Irene Rapp, nature editor at the "Tiroler Tageszeitung" newspaper
