National Park Walk: Innergschlöss

Considered one of the most beautiful valley ends of the Eastern Alps, Innergschlöss is a real gem. And this walk is a jewel, providing hikers a unique opportunity to experience the breathtaking beauty of Hohe Tauern National Park and of the mighty glaciers surrounding Großvenediger, one of Austria’s grandest mountains. This easy National Park trail into Innergschlöss provides an amazing route to surprising panoramas of Großvenediger Mountain Rainier and the craggy peaks of the Hohe Tauern Range. The gorgeous wilderness area, a pristine Alpine pasture village and a rock chapel make photography stops almost mandatory. Brimming with colourful splashes of rare wildflowers, this is also an excellent destination for wildlife viewing. Along the way, be alert for marmots and adders, and it is not unusual to see a bearded vulture, also known as the lammergeyer. With a wingspan of up to 2.9 m, it is one of the largest birds that is able to fly in the world.

Trail description

The National Park Hiker’s Shuttle Bus stops right in front of Matreier Tauernhaus Lodge, from where the trail into Innergschlöss starts. Rewarding stops along the way are “D’Hölle“, where the streams of Dichtenbach and Tauernbach merge. Right behind is where you will find the chocolate-box Alpine pasture village of Außergschlöss, from where there are uninterrupted panoramic views of mighty Schlatenkees Glacier. The historic rock chapel located between the Alpine pastures of Inner and Outer Gschlöss is a perfect place for taking some quiet time listening to nature and absorbing the amazing scenery, surrounded by pure mountain beauty. The route continues to Venedigerhaus Lodge in Innergschlöss. To get back to the trailhead, you can either take Trail #925, which runs south of Gschlössbach Brook, or take the same route out that you walked in.
