Stadtpfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt
Schulhausplatz 4
6500 Landeck
Today's parish church of the Assumption is based on a legend depicted in the parish church. (The robbed children of a family were brought back by a wolf and a bear.)
The Seelsorg Church was first mentioned in a document in 1270. The Romanesque church likely soon became too small, which is why it was enlarged at the end of the 14th century. Unlike other three-nave churches, the pioneering design of the Landeck parish church features a basilica-style layout with lower side aisles and a taller central nave. Inside, there is a tombstone that also serves as the tomb slab of the church’s founder, Knight Oswald von Schrofenstein. The so-called Schrofenstein Altar, a late-Gothic winged altar dating from 1520, was erected in his memory; it is dedicated to Saint Oswald.
The organ features a historic double case, a crenellated top, and elaborately carved soundboards. Also worthy of note is the sacristy of the parish church, which features a Baroque barrel vault with keystones on the ground floor. The cemetery is bordered on the south side by a Neo-Gothic colonnade, which is divided by three chapel-like openings. Also located in the cemetery is the neo-Gothic Chapel of the Sacred Heart, which was built in 1869 and is dedicated to those who fell in the Battle of Le Tezze.
