Attraction Wayside shrine at the place of encounter

Ehrwald

A symbol of encounter

Information

Source: Alpbachtal

Description

This jewel was erected in the Holy Year 2000 by the Ehrwald Rifle Company as a visible testimony of faith at the junction of the Boarsteig - Steig zur Wiener Neustädter Hütte - Schützensteig. This is where the various paths of the hikers cross, where encounters take place. This is also where the trail leads down to the Eibsee and the neighbouring Bavarian community of Grainau (D). In earlier times of border controls, smugglers were often on the move. The wayside shrine shows four panels with the coats of arms of Ehrwald and Grainau, the Ehrwald parish patrocinium "Maria Heimsuchung" as a symbol of encounter, the patron saint of marksmen, St. Sebastian, and an explanatory text about the reasons for its construction. Since then, a solemn Holy Mass has been celebrated every year on the first Sunday in September at 12.00 noon at the meeting place.
